Gut health beyond bloating

Why digestion shows up in energy, mood, and skin, and what’s worth paying attention to first.

Digestive health shows up well beyond digestion. The gut influences nutrient absorption, immune signaling, hormone metabolism, and neurotransmitter production, which is why gut complaints often travel with fatigue, mood changes, and skin issues.

Where I start

  • Meal structure and pace, since digestion begins before the first bite
  • Fiber and plant variety, increased gradually
  • Identifying true triggers rather than broad elimination
  • Ruling out red flags that need conventional workup or referral

When testing helps

Testing is useful when the history suggests something specific: persistent bloating with a clear pattern, unexplained deficiencies, or symptoms that have not responded to foundational changes. It is less useful as a starting point.

Red flag symptoms, including bleeding, unintentional weight loss, or difficulty swallowing, warrant prompt conventional evaluation.
